Biology

COMPULSORY TASK:

This task is based on working on your areas of development from your two biology papers you sat at the end of this year.

There is a separate pack of exam questions for the 12CB1/2 classes (click here for 12CB1/2) and a different one for the 12DB1 class (click here for 12DB1).

Using this exam question pack, please complete any questions which match up to your areas of development from the most recent biology assessment. The areas you need to develop on are the areas where you scored less than 50% in the papers. This information can be found on the feedback sheet which will have been given out in class.

If you have no questions where you scored less than 50%, please pick a selection of exam questions from at least 6 topics and complete these as it is still a good revision resource.

These exam questions can either be completed on paper or online. The mark scheme for these will be posted when we return to school in September.

This task is due in on your first biology lesson in September. Please either bring it to this lesson or submit it via google classroom before then.

If you have any questions, please email c.livick-smith@springwoodhighschool.co.uk

OPTIONAL EXTENSION:

This task is an optional stretch and challenge task for those that would like to push themselves further.

Please write a detailed plan for the following essay title:

‘Write an essay on the importance of diffusion in organisms’

This plan needs to include:

  • 5 topic areas
  • Where diffusion plays a role in these topics
  • Why diffusion is important in these topics

The purpose of this task is to prepare you for writing 25-mark essays. Practice for this will start in year 13.

  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot’s fascinating account is the story of the life, and afterlife, of one woman who changed the medical world for ever. Balancing the beauty and drama of scientific discovery with dark questions about who owns the stuff our bodies are made of, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is an extraordinary journey in search of the soul and story of a real woman, whose cells live on today in all four corners of the world.
  • The Epigenetics Revolution - At the beginning of this century enormous progress had been made in genetics. The Human Genome Project finished sequencing human DNA. It seemed it was only a matter of time until we had all the answers to the secrets of life on this planet.
