School of Sanctuary

Springwood is a welcoming school with students from 31 countries and our students can speak 44 different languages.  We have signed the Norfolk School of Sanctuary pledge which is a public commitment to the City of Sanctuary vision of welcome.  Many of these students have parents who have been recruited by the NHS to work in our local hospitals and medical practices.

The Schools of Sanctuary initiative celebrates the good practice of schools who welcome asylum seeking and refugee families into their school community and foster a culture of welcome and inclusion for all.  Today there are more than 300 Schools of Sanctuary nationally, 16 in Norfolk and 22 (including Springwood), who have pledged and are working towards school of sanctuary status.

School of Sanctuary is part of the City of Sanctuary movement, which holds the vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and a place that is proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.

Schools of Sanctuary help their pupils, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community.
