Some of our Year 8s were inspired with poetry by a visit from Ash Dickinson, a poet, writer and comedy performer. He was talked about poetry, why he writes it/the benefits, a love of language, the difference between page and stage poetry, the writing process, slams.
He really caught the attention of the students and gave year 8 some warm-up exercises, based around rhyme and poetic techniques- simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia etc; exercises based on personification or metaphor.
He provided themes or the start (or structure) of a poem and allowed them opportunity to write and use their imagination.the opportunity to put forward their own ideas in writing their own poetry. Ash also recited one of his poems, bringing his words to life in a quirky and inspiring way.
It was a great experience for both staff and students.
