Applied Science
COMPULSORY TASK:
Complete the set work for your next assignment – covering the research required into bacterial and viral disease. You may expand this to include other types of pathogens.
Failure to complete this to the required standard will put you behind in your second year. Missing work or work of a poor quality will require you to attend additional support lessons, before or after school in September.
Your research should be written up with an introduction and clear references.
If you have any questions, please email l.dawson@springwoodhighschool.co.uk
OPTIONAL EXTENSION:
Watch ‘It’s a Sin’ available on 4 on Demand - A drama based on the AIDS epidemic in the 80’s.
Note: This tackles sensitive content and is aimed at an audience 17+. Discussion with/discretion of a parent before viewing is advised.
From this, consider the following and start to write out a distinction-level analysis of the impact this disease has on a person's life. This is likely to be at least 1 A4 page long.
*Be aware that this drama is set in the 80’s, which is a good place to start when considering the stigma generated around a particular disease. However, you will need to consider how the views around HIV and treatments etc have evolved over time and are now viewed in the modern-day context.
Things to consider in your analysis:
- Social impact of disease, including the perception of the wider society
- Psychological/emotional impact of both diagnosis and living with the disease
- Long-term impact surrounding relationships, planning of a family and interactions with others
- Support and treatments in place
- Ongoing and end of life care
