Religious Studies
COMPULSORY TASK:
You have lots of resources in Google classroom and in your folders for all three sections of the course, but here are the specific tasks we would like you to do: Each section has an optional task and a definitely not optional bit! (And – needless to state, if you are aiming for a higher grade, we would definitely advise you to do the optional bits!)
Philosophy:
Students will be assigned a religious experience to research and provide this research to the class. There will be a document in the Classroom for you to edit.
Ethics:
Secure your knowledge of the key words for the Year 1 content. Too many of you are still confusing terms like teleological and deontological.
Buddhism:
One essay : Assess the differences between the Noble Eightfold Path and the Bodhisattva Path.
These tasks need to be handed in to your first lesson in September.
If you have any questions, please email a.dennis@springwoodhighschool.co.uk
OPTIONAL EXTENSION:
Philosophy:
Listen to the Panpsycast podcast episodes on Religious Experience
- The Panpsycast Podcast - Religious Experience - Part I
- The Panpsycast Podcast - Religious Experience - Part II
- The Panpsycast Podcast - Religious Experience - Part III
Ethics:
Watch video overview of sexual ethics (this is in the Google classroom).
Buddhism:
Research three key bodhisattvas – Avolokitesvara, Manjusri and Maitreya. (Be aware names can be spelt differently). You don’t need huge amounts of detail, but you do need to speak about them with knowledge and confidence – all are mentioned on the syllabus. This would be useful for your essay, and we will be looking at them in September.
ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDED READING:
For Ethics keep up to date with current news stories, looking out for ethical issues and decisions being made. Use the BBC website or similar reliable news source. Take notice of decisions made, and be aware of issues around the world, not just in the UK or Europe.
Watching the film ‘Schindler’s List’ would also be useful.
For Philosophy try ‘Sophie’s World’ but don’t worry if you can’t understand it all!
For Buddhism try the autobiography of the 14th Dalai Lama, or Siddhartha by Herman Hesse.
