COMPULSORY TASK:

Answer the following question in at least 1000 words:

How has COVID-19 affected Politics in the UK and USA?

You should include information under the following headings:

  • The Public Health (Control of disease) Act (1984) and the Coronavirus Act (2020)
  • The use of secondary legislation
  • Devolution (including directly elected mayors)
  • Challenges to civil rights (for example, the vigil for Sarah Everard on Clapham Common)
  • The debate on rule-breaking and its significance for the legislative to hold the executive to account.
  • A left/right divide on the degree of acceptable restrictions of individual rights (in the UK and the USA)
  • Federalism in the USA

Please submit tasks to Mr Whitlam on the first lesson back after the summer break.

OPTIONAL EXTENSION:

Political Ideas:

Read a text by one of the Political Ideas key thinkers.  Almost all are available free online.  Look for ideas by looking at the key works in the Politics Ideas textbook.  An example is the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx.

Make notes on the text, noting the author’s views on Human Nature, Society, the Economy and the State.
