How does our curriculum support the School of Sanctuary ethos?
We have an integrated whole school approach to ensure that all our students feel welcome and a part of our school community. A key part of this is our student Diversity Council, who ensure our student voice is heard and lead initiatives to raise the profile of diversity and welcome in school. This year, they have led the activities for Refugee Week by holding a charity cake sale, producing a reading display in the LRC of refugee-related books, delivered an assembly to their peers and produced a welcome video that you can see here.
The theme of welcome is interwoven and taught via a blended curriculum that includes almost every subject at Springwood, including PSHE during tutor time and assemblies. Students will cover topics like ‘them and us’ and ‘British Values’ in PSHE, immigration, empire, race and migration in History; refugees in English; consider the impact of a lack of immigration on countries like Japan in Geography and A-Level students of MFL study the impacts of immigration on our European neighbours.
Extra-curricular trips in the last two years have enabled our students to experience and make friends in France, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Peru, Tanzania, and the USA.
