MEET OUR SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM MR NICKWILLS I joined Springwood High School in September 1997 as deputy head of Maths. Since then my role has changed within the school and I am now the Associate Headteacher, working alongside Mr Johnson and the rest of the senior team running the school.. I still teach maths and computer science and so you may see me in lessons, however I also meet with all of our in-year admissions to the school. My other day-to-day responsibilities include the curriculum, writing your timetables and helping students with their attendance. You will often see me around school in your lessons, or on duty during the day. Springwood is a wonderful school to work in and I hope you will take all of the opportunities offered to you when you join the school. MISS SALLY ASHFIELD My Springwood journey started in 2005 as a teacher of Mathematics when I moved from Mansfield to be nearer to the sea. I have had various roles since then and have been Deputy Headteacher for the last 5 years. Springwood has been my school of choice for all three of my children and I am very proud that so many of our staff also choose Springwood for their children. In my role, I am responsible for overseeing Key Stage 3 and 4. A fundamental part of this is coordinating the transition from Year 6 to 7 along with ensuring our high standards are maintained across the school in line with our four key principles. I feel incredibly fortunate to work in such an amazing environment, surrounded by friendly, respectful and hard-working students and supported by committed, dedicated and passionate staff and I look forward to welcoming you to Springwood High School when you start your journey with us. MR JAMIE WARNER-LYNN I moved from Liverpool to join Springwood in 2018 and I have never looked back! As Deputy Headteacher, I work closely with Mr Johnson and the senior leadership team to make sure that all of our pupils have a positive experience. I am also an English teacher. It is my great privilege to have responsibility for our Sixth Form. A strong school sixth form is incredibly important, because it represents a clear choice for our pupils; many of whom aspire to join us in Year 12 following their GCSEs. Please have a look at our Sixth Form prospectus and contact the Sixth Form team if you have any queries.

We have a very strong Modern Foreign Languages department with French, German and Spanish all being offered at GCSE and A level. We believe that an important part of language learning is discovering the culture of the target language country, and we are especially proud of the many ways we bring languages to life through the diverse events, competitions and trips on offer at Springwood. In addition to the main languages we offer, we also support students who wish to take a qualification in their native language as a Modern Foreign Language, and have seen much success in recent years with students taking exams in Polish, Russian, Portuguese and Dutch, to name but a few. For students interested non-European languages, we are delighted to be able to offer an extracurricular Mandarin club. We are keen for students to be able to demonstrate their achievements in languages outside the classroom, and run several foreign language competitions. Our students have consistently excelled in regional and national finals of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee. We also hold regular quizzes with other schools across West Norfolk, giving students the opportunity to compete with other students in the area. Our German exchange programme has been running for over thirty years and we are now extending this tradition to include a KS3 virtual pen pal club, allowing students to make use of their language skills in real-life situations, outside of the classroom. Our Key Stage 3 French residential trip sees students participate in a range of outdoor activities, such as canoeing and archery, as well visiting Paris and a traditional French bakery.

OUTSTANDING TEACHING ANDLEARNING FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS We are very fortunate to have an incredible wealth of expertise and experience within our teaching staff and we have worked tirelessly to create a curriculum for our students that is engaging, knowledge rich, stimulating and, most importantly, highly educational. All of our Key Stage 3 students study a full range of National Curriculum subjects, including a full PSHE programme delivered by a team of dedicated tutors. To support our students in their studies at KS3, they will receive a custom-made Knowledge Organiser booklet every term that contains the core knowledge for all of their subjects for that term. We also like to take every opportunity to celebrate progress, achievements and success.

Towards the end of Key Stage 3, students are provided with individual advice and guidance to help decide on their GCSE courses. Students in Years 10 and 11 follow a core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, Physical Education and Religious Education. They also study a selection of subjects chosen from a wide range of options.

RICHARD THOMSON I attended Springwood High School and Sixth Form as a student during the late 1980’s and returned to teach at the school in 2011. The school I joined in 2011, whilst retaining its excellent music and arts reputation, had now developed strong academic outcomes with a growing Sixth Form. Over the last decade, this trend has continued. When my own children reached secondary school age, I had no hesitation in choosing Springwood as my first choice for them and have never regretted that choice. My daughter, now in Year 11, has been offered a wealth of opportunities which she has taken and benefitted from immensely. My son has settled wonderfully at Springwood despite the challenges of lockdown. Both look forward to school every day. I am proud to be a teacher at the school and hear first-hand from my children what a brilliant job Springwood teachers do every day. MAXIMISING STUDENTACHIEVEMENT LEE EVESON I have been a teacher of Art and Photography for 20 years and Head of Art at Springwood for the past seven years. Being a teacher at this school is the most amazing job, but I have also worked as a professional photographer, illustrator and Fine Artist and currently have an exhibition touring around London and six European capitals. The Creative Arts are brilliant subjects to study, as they lead into so many varied careers and help develop your life skills. They have an important place in the curriculum and ethos of Springwood High School. You will get the opportunity at Springwood to go on national and international field trips, enter national competitions and be part of exhibitions and performances. Springwood is a special place where all of the teachers believe in giving you the best education, and where both academic and creative subjects establish wellrounded and dynamic students. 08

EMMA MARKWELL This September will mark my tenth anniversary working at Springwood High School. I love the variety in my role as a GCSE Design and Technology teacher, covering subjects from Food Tech to Woodwork, Metalwork, and Computer Aided Design. Everyone who knows me, however, knows that my passion is fashion, and I absolutely adore teaching BTEC Fashion and Textiles in Years 12 & 13. I also run an after-school Textiles club for the younger students which is always popular. The highlight of the year is the Springwood fashion show where the students showcase their work, all modelled by their fellow students The atmosphere in the D&T department is buzzing with creativity, with dedicated teachers and support staff, and most importantly the wonderful students and their energetic enthusiasm for the subject. At Springwood, we believe the key to student achievement is world class teaching in a fully supportive environment! Here are just a few of our amazing teachers. BEN COOTE I am part of the fantastic maths department at Springwood. I am extremely passionate about teaching maths and still love learning new skills and concepts. Whether you are in Year 7 or Year 13, I enjoy helping all students learn new maths skills and hope that my passion helps to motivate students to learn and appreciate the subject. Maths is an extremely enjoyable subject, it makes you think logically and really helps to develop your problem solving skills. Springwood’s maths department is dedicated to supporting every student and there is lots of extra help available to anyone who need it. There is also plenty of challenge, both in lessons and extracurricular events. From my 7 years as a student and 6 years as a teacher, Springwood has been a brilliant place to learn and also an excellent place to work. All of the staff are very friendly and caring, and all pull together to make Springwood a safe and welcoming place for all.

Working alongside our subject teachers, we have an amazing student support network. Mrs Christine Franks and Mrs Rosanna Freeman are our Designated Safeguarding Leads. They ensure that all of our students have someone they can talk to. Every year group has a dedicated Head of Year and Year Manager who, along with a team of tutors, will stay with the year group throughout their Springwood journey. The Head of Year takes responsibility for the academic achievement and progress of our students. They will offer support and advice to ensure the success of each student .The Year Manager facilitates a direct link for parents, whilst providing students with additional pastoral support whenever the need arises. Mrs Kaye Bunting leads a highly qualified and experienced SEN Team. The team work tirelessly to ensure every student’s needs are met.

Alongside their studies, students in Key Stage 4 are fully supported in their preparations for the next stage of their journey. Pastoral tutors and expert staff provide top quality advice on further and higher education and apprenticeships. Students also have access to one-to-one meetings with a Careers Advisor. As an 11-18 school, many of our students’ first choice is Springwood Sixth Form with the majority choosing A Level courses. We also offer full time Hair and Beauty courses in our onsite salon which is open to the public. While students in Key Stages 4 and 5 can also opt to study courses related to the Construction Industry. FOR FURTHER DETAILS ON OUR KEY STAGE 5 COURSES, PLEASE SEE OUR SPRINGWOOD SIXTH FORM PROSPECTUS ALONGWITH INFORMATION ON HOW TO APPLY.

MAXIMISING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT We fully believe in the concept that the more you put into something, the more you will get out and we want all of our students to get involved in everything Springwood has to offer. EVERY YEAR 7 STUDENT IS SET THE CHALLENGE TO BE A HERO. TOP MARKS IN THIS CHALLENGE MAKES YOU A SUPER HERO! A Attendance H House Contribution E Extra-Curricular Activities R Reading O Organisation We embed this expectation into our Personal Development programmes that every student participates in. Once HERO status has been achieved, students move onto the ENDEAVOUR programme. This has been described by students as one of the most fun things that you do at Springwood that really puts you outside your comfort zone! Successfully completing the nine challenges, including fund raising for charity and presenting in front of an audience, gains you entry to SpringFest at the end of Year 8.

Every Springwood student has the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. All Year 9 students are entered for their Bronze award. From there, they are strongly encouraged to continue onto higher awards. We want our students to take the lead wherever possible and we gain an enormous sense of pride watching them grow into these roles and change their part of the world for the better. Being part of Springwood means having access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities – wide enough for everyone to find something they enjoy!
